Bring woodcarving knives or utility knives if you have them. This hands-on program will take place in the Rowe Visitor Center. Recommended for adults or children 7 and up with a parent. Space is limited and preregistration is required. A parent and child may share one kit. Your voice and opinion have tremendous influence on public policy. The Ohio Environmental Council will be conducting this workshop, during which you will learn effective ways to be heard by local and state officials. Preregistration is required.

February 13, 2010 Backyard Maple Sugaring: A Hands-On, How-To Workshop Location: Cincinnati Nature Center at Rowe Woods, 4949 Tealtown Rd, Milford 513-831-1711 x413 2:00 PM- 4:00 PM Members $5, Non Members $8 Do you want to make syrup from the maple trees in your yard? This workshop is for people who wish to make syrup on a small scale and will be filled with “sweet” advice concerning the selection of trees, tapping, sap collection, sap storage and boiling, as well as finishing and canning syrup. Spiles (tree taps) will be available for purchase. Preregistration is required. Meet in Rowe Woods Visitor Center.

This program includes a guided hike in the sugarbush, a look into the Native American origins of sugaring and a visit to the Sugar House. Scouts or homeschool students will tap a tree with a hand drill; help with sugaring work, and sample warm maple syrup right off the evaporator. This program takes place outdoors, regardless of weather. Preregistration is required. Minimum to register is 10 scouts. Large groups will be separated into smaller groups of 10 or fewer. Each group of 10 must be accompanied by an adult chaperone. Hour-long hikes begin at the Sugar House.

Experience the whole process of producing “liquid gold” maple syrup from sap and bask in the warmth of the evaporator and it’s maple-scented steam. Join in an interactive sap-collecting maple hike at 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, or 2:00 PM. Hikes start at the Sugar House. A self-guided maple trail is also available.

February 26-27, 2010 Family Nature at Night: An Overnight Program Location: Cincinnati Nature Center, Rowe Woods, 4949 Tealtown Rd. Milford 513-831-1711 7:00 PM- 9:00 PM Members $120 per room, Non Members $160 per room. Have you ever wanted to spend the night at Cincinnati Nature Center? Curious about what happens in the forest when the sun goes down? Here’s your chance! On Friday February 26, join us for an overnight adventure at the Retreat House. Families will enjoy a night hike, craft, campfire, and much more. A light breakfast will be provided. You will sleep in dorm style rooms equipped with two bunk beds to accommodate four people. Rooms may be divided between two families with only one adult and one child. Appropriate for 6 and older. Preregistration required by February 5.

Learn about documented data of cougar, bobcat, and black bear in Ohio and discover how to read the woods through tracking. We’ll spend time indoors and out during this two-hour workshop. Naturalists and costumed interpreters will lead visitors through historical and modern day methods of making maple syrup.

For this one day event we expect over 800 rowers and an additional 3,200 fans. August 1, 2010 East Fork Triathlon and Duathlon Location: East Fork State Park Bethel, Ohio 8:00 AM-1:00 PM Adults $45.00-$55.00 The fourth stop on the HFP Racing Triathlon and Duathlon Series is at East Fork State Park. This race site has been a Cincinnati tradition for more than 25 years. Triathletes will start off with a 750 meter swim (1 lap Sprint, 2-laps Olympic) in East Fork Lake. Duathletes will start off with challenging 5K out and back run. The bike courses feature a rolling loop east of Rt 125 for both the sprint and international distance races. The final run is an out and back 5K run (1-lap Sprint, 2 –laps Olympic) that features a big hill at the start, the levels out for the remaining run.
